Nuts visually inspected after collection for presence of exit holes chestnut weevil (Curculio elephas) and moth (Cydia splendana), 20 nuts per sampling tree bisected assess fungal colonization. Apparently healthy incubated at 24 C 70–80% relative humidity 21 days. All incubation examined insects moulds. The harvest method did not have a statistically significant effect on moulding insect infestation except Amphiporthe castanea. This vertically transmitted endophyte was less frequently isolated fruits black rot fungus Ciboria batschiana occur in chestnuts intercepted nets, but difference significant. frequency colonized by C. low general probably due hot dry summer 2003. Big, marketable appeared be moulds right collection. disappeared moth. mother had greatest infestation, indicating importance genetic disposition and/or phytosanitary situation each tree. preferred
