Farmer participation in reforestation incentive programs in Costa Rica

摘要: Reforestation programs are a common policy response among developing country governments in the tropics attempting to deal with environmental and economic problems caused by widespread deforestation. The objective of this paper is examine participation small-and medium-sized farms two reforestation undertaken recent years one country, Costa Rica, which has been at forefront protection efforts. Analysis survey 243 program participants non-participants shows that farm households participating had generally larger sizes, were dedicated low labor-intensive, land-extensive agricultural activities, faced significant family on-farm labor constraints, more heavily dependent on off-farm income sources, extensive contact local extension Logistic regression employed econometrically identify demographic, economic, land use determinants household programs; implications these findings analyzed. limitations programs, especially regard management factors quality reforested plots, reviewed. Implications for improving efficiency merits other alternatives also discussed.
