Re-building relationships after a spinal cord injury: experiences of family caregivers and care recipients

摘要: Following spinal cord injury (SCI), family members are often called upon to undertake the caregiving role. This change in nature of relationship between individuals with SCI and their families can lead emotional, psychological, challenges. There is limited research on how caregivers adapt new lives post-injury, or which dyadic coping strategies used maintain relationships. Thus, objectives this study were obtain an in-depth understanding 1) experiences challenges within a post-SCI among spouses, as well parents adult children; 2) by care recipients maintain/rebuild A qualitative descriptive approach exploratory design was used. Semi-structured face-to-face telephone interviews conducted. Thematic analysis identify key themes arising from SCI’s (n = 19) caregivers’ (n = 15) experiences. Individuals spoke openly about two emerging (including subsequent sub-themes). The first theme deterioration relationship, reflects experienced/factors that contributed disintegration included: protective behaviours, asymmetrical dependency, loss sex intimacy, difficulty adapting. second re-building/maintaining dyads adjust changes brought injury, interdependence, shifting commonalities, adding creativity into routine, creating normal. These findings should alert healthcare professionals peer support groups need for possible education training (e.g., strategies, communication skills training) counseling prior discharge assist adaptation life post-injury.
