We established a forest restoration project at the Lagunas de Montebello National Park (LMNP), Chiapas, southern Mexico, biologically important area severely impacted by surrounding human settlements. In September 2003, 3,030 saplings of 16 tree species were planted in eight 2,500 m2 plots. Survival and growth assessed regularly analyzed as function soil conditions, vegetative cover, successional group (early, mid-, late successional). After 36 months evaluation, highest survival was recorded early (66.4% ± 4.7%) mid-successional (65.1% 3.2%); considerably lower (24.1% 4.7%). Plant varied among groups between response variables (maximum height basal stem diameter). all species, positively related to diameter; nine we observed considerable leaf/branch loss or death. Forest with native trees LMNP is still an stage, yet it appears feasible using fast-growing such sweetgum ( Liquidambar styraciflua ), oaks Quercus spp.), candleberry Morella cerifera ). The establishment late-successional like wild cherry Prunus brachybotrya , P. lundelliana pajalte Synardisia venosa estoraque Styrax magnus ) more limited requires preexisting plant cover that can be provided pioneer species.
