Diets of Wedge-tailed Eagles (Aquila audax) and Little Eagles (Hieraaetus morphnoides) Breeding Near Canberra, Australia

摘要: Recent concern about the decline of Little Eagle (Hieraaetus morphnoides) in southeastern Australia has raised questions whether Wedge-tailed Eagles (Aquila audax) might be implicated this decline. The ecology, including diet, is rather poorly known. diet Wedge- tailed better documented, but overlap prey used by two eagles been little studied. Near Canberra between July 2002 and January 2008, we identified 1421 192 items from nests Eagles, respectively. Eagles' was similar to that reported elsewhere. In addition European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), specialized on birds, tended avoid macropods, a main there eagle species. Although Standardised Food Niche Breadth Shannon Diversity Index were for eagles, captured significantly larger prey, as indicated difference Geometric Mean Prey Weight, 1298 g 249 which reflected fivefold mass male Eagles.
