QCD in magnetic fields: from Hofstadter's butterfly to the phase diagram

摘要: I revisit the problem of a charged particle on two-dimensional lattice immersed in constant (electro)magnetic field, and discuss energy spectrum - Hofstadter's butterfly from new, quantum field theoretical perspective. In particular, point out that there is an intricate interplay between a) structure at low magnetic flux, b) absence asymptotic freedom QED c) enhancement quark condensate by zero temperature. proceed to response QCD nonzero temperatures four space-time dimensions, present resulting phase diagram compare it low-energy model predictions.
