Cardiovascular disease risk factors among older black, Mexican-American, and white women and men: an analysis of NHANES III, 1988-1994. Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

摘要: CONTEXT: There are few studies of ethnic differences in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors older populations. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association ethnicity on CVD factors, after accounting for socioeconomic status (SES), and to health behaviors among those with factors. DESIGN: Third National Health Nutrition Examination Survey, 1988–1994. SETTING: Eighty-nine mobile examination centers. PARTICIPANTS: 700 black, 628 Mexican-American, 2192 white women men age 65 84 years. MEASUREMENTS: Ethnicity relation type II diabetes mellitus, physical inactivity, abdominal obesity, hypertension, cigarette smoking non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C). RESULTS: After SES, both black Mexican-American had significantly higher prevalences than women. In addition, were more likely have obesity hypertension be physically inactive Black inactivity men. However, lower men, high non-HDL-C Among need improvement, especially whose primary language was Spanish. CONCLUSIONS: this national sample Mexican American at greatest CVD. These findings parallel heightened younger minority populations argue appropriate secondary prevention programs, modified language, cultural, medical needs minorities.
