摘要: Abstract Most diatom species produce at least two classes of oxylipins, polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs) and non-volatile oxylipins (NVOs). These compounds can act as grazer deterrents by reducing the reproductive success copepod grazers. The aim present study was to better understand impact late-winter blooms diatom-derived PUAs NVOs on reproduction dominant in northern Adriatic Sea, consecutive years. Higher abundance 2005 compared 2004 coincided with higher egg-production rates both Acartia clausi Calanus helgolandicus. increased contribution diatoms phytoplankton assemblage also led a production NVOs, whereas PUA levels were low three-times-higher oxylipin correlated decrease average hatching A. C. helgolandicus from ∼80% ∼60% 2005, indicating that observed negative effects recruitment latter year related greater NVOs. Our findings reveal importance these metabolites offer an explanation why may be more toxic for copepods some years others.
