摘要: The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying chronic constipation in both adults and children remain to be unravelled. This is a not inconsiderable challenge, but fundamental improving management of such patients. Rectal sensorimotor function, which encompasses sensation motility, as well biomechanical components (compliance, capacity), now strongly implicated the pathogenesis constipation. hyposensitivity, rectal hypercompliance, increased capacity, motor dysfunction (phasic contractility tone), altered rectoanal reflex activity are all found constipated patients, particularly association with 'functional' disorders defaecation (i.e. pelvic floor dyssynergia). review covers contemporary understanding how function may contribute symptom development adult paediatric populations. complex interaction between sensory/motor/biomechanical domains, best measure these functions addressed, where data exist, impact on therapeutic outcomes highlighted.
