First detection of Cherenkov light from cosmic-particle-induced air showers by Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes

摘要: We report on first tests of Geiger-mode APDs (G-APD) to detect Cherenkov light from cosmic particle induced air showers. The motivation for this study stems the requirement improve sensitivity large imaging atmospheric telescopes (IACT) by replacing photomultipliers (PMT) high detection efficiency G-APDs. Three have been carried out, confirming sufficiently blue-sensitive G-APDs as future replacement PMTs in IACTs.
