摘要: Objective This study assesses the antitubercular potential of natural products obtained from plants reputed to have medicinal properties and collected tropical flora Puerto Rico. Background The increase in persons infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) world over development resistance antibiotics by this microbe other infectious bacteria has created need for new drugs replace those which lost effectiveness. Method In Phase I study, ethanolic leaf extracts fifty local were submitted preliminary screening assess their vitro smegmatis inhibitory activity using Bauer-Kirby disk diffusion method. II, definitive six most promising inhibited M. assayed MTB BACTEC 460 susceptibility test brine shrimp bioassay was used as a toxicity mice inoculation determine tolerance effect daily intraperitoneal inoculations plant extracts. Results showed varying degrees each extract. dependent upon species, dose time exposure. Evidence is provided suggesting that: (1) Six crude (12%) tested possessed capacity at amount 500 micrograms per disc; (2) Mammea americana extract yielded strongest 50 disc, followed Marchantia polymorpha, Mangifera indica, Callistemon citrinus, Syzygium jambos Momordica charantia; (3) bactericidal pattern growth, exposed extract, comparable streptomycin; (4) transitory reduction produced polymorpha 100 250 micrograms, similar that bacteriostatic agents. Conclusion Of screened anti-MTB positive results inhibition. greatest certain species yield valuable anti-Mycobacterium substances. procedures employed including modified method, are useful activity.
