摘要: Lake Tanganyika hosts one of the largest inland fisheries in Africa and is a significant source food livelihood to millions dwelling inside outside its basin. The lake environs support wide array subsistence commercial activity as well remarkable assemblage tropical flora fauna, including highly diverse populations endemic fish. This paper describes efforts undertaken through FAO/FINNIDA Research Project (LTR) investigate lake's production potential advise on modalities for optimal management resources, order serve present future human welfare conservation needs. Specifically, essays to: (a) provide background scope content LTR work; (b) situate project research methodologies terms contemporary developments theory application; (c) identify characterise, with reference outcomes generated project's Scientific Sampling Programme, socio-economic investigations legal-institutional studies, major development challenges that confront resource users, administrators, planners, policy makers; finally, (d) consider various options appropriate conditions ecosystem uncertainty, plural stakeholder interests complex interactions between fishing non-fishing sectors wider economy. It argued situation defies diagnosis prescription according conventional ‘stock assessment driven’ thinking. instead presents compelling case application multi-disciplinary approaches, involving strong levels community participation.
