We tested strength significance of density with improved methods new WHO dataset. Methods did cross-country multiple regression analyses maternal mortality rate, infant under-five rate as dependent variables. Aggregate was an independent variable in one set regressions; doctor nurse densities separately were used another set. controlled effects income, female adult literacy, absolute income poverty. Findings Density is significant accounting (with elasticities ranging from –0·474 to –0·212, all p values Interpretation In addition other determinants, important variation rates mortality, across countries. The effect this reducing greater than child possibly because qualified medical personnel can better address illnesses that put mothers risk. Investment must be considered part strategy achieve Millennium Development Goals improving mortality.
