摘要: Increases in motor vehicle traffic, habitat loss, and human-deer interactions due to urban development threaten the recovery management of Florida Key deer (Odocoileus virginianus clavium). To evaluate these threats, we estimated current survival rates compared them historic estimates, evaluated causes mortality from 1966 2000, determined life expectancy marked animals. We radiomarked as part 2 separate field studies (1968-1972, 1998-2000), addition collecting data survey estimates (1966-2000). analyzed 314 (157 male, 157 female) using a known-fate model framework program MARK. considered suite priori models based on biology knowledge deer, ranked Akaike's Information Criterion ($text{AIC}_{c}$) selection. Important factors explaining were sex geographical location. Model-averaged annual male (0.412-0.842) was lower than female (0.695-0.888). Marked (n = 35) lived an average 6.5 years (maximum 19 years), while 43) 2.9 12 years). Deer also increased moved away U.S. Highway 1 (US 1). Deer-motor collisions accounted for >50% total mortality, half which occurred US 1. Annual since 1972 has is attributed increase population size (1972-2000, 240%). recommend finding methods reduce deer-motor because human safety concerns. As efforts continue, biologists need address high densities this locally abundant but endangered population.
