摘要: OBJECTIVE The authors hypothesized that cortical gray matter volume reduction in schizophrenia is greatest the heteromodal association cortex. This area comprises a highly integrated, reciprocally interconnected system coordinates higher order functions. METHOD Total brain and regional volumes were calculated 46 schizophrenic patients 60 age sex-matched comparison subjects by using magnetic resonance images. Disease specificity was examined assessing 27 with bipolar disorder. Approximations to dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, inferior parietal lobule, superior temporal gyrus selected as regions of interest for Occipital sensorimotor areas used test hypothesis specificity. RESULTS Gray reduced index even after covariance overall volume, sex, age. Bipolar disorder did not exhibit reduction. Comparison differ among three groups. Global different groups global volume. Comprehensive individual region post hoc analysis found no additional differences. CONCLUSIONS These findings support theory disproportionate cortex specific schizophrenia.
