摘要: OBJECTIVES To examine the extent to which numeracy predicts consumer-directed health plan (CDHP) comprehension and choice. Also, test whether can be improved using different presentation approaches. STUDY DESIGN We conducted an experimental laboratory study in 303 adults viewed information about a hypothetical CDHP preferred provider organization (PPO) presented several ways. Participants were randomized view comparisons side-by-side or common/unique format, not framework. METHODS completed survey that included items, literacy assessments, sociodemographics. Multivariate regression models developed independent effects of approach on Interactions between approaches tested. RESULTS Although less numerate consumers understood CDHPs, they substantially more likely select CDHP. Providing overarching framework highlight differences PPO boosted items related message. However, it reduced framework, particularly among numerate. reported comparative was easier understand, yet there trend toward approach. CONCLUSIONS This highlights difficulty many have understanding making informed healthcare choices. Findings also indicate some strategies may help skilled understand choices better.
