摘要: Test utilization is an essential strategy in the clinical laboratory, especially with increasing numbers of tests and health care costs. We designed a triage system for molecular microbiology ordered from 2007 through 2010 to assess their appropriateness before they were sent out reference laboratory testing. The number approved positive results calculated during study period. Cost avoidance was subsequently calculated. A total 13,839 ordered, averaging 3,335 tests/year. overall approval rate 76%, ranging 72% 81% 2010. With exception cytomegalovirus (CMV) BK virus PCR, all decreased compared 2007. savings over 4 years $374,791, average cost $93,698/year. Pathologists microbiologists should design testing avoid unnecessary improve patient care.
