As a reaction to the continued dwindling of tropical forest resources, many research and develop- ment organizations have turned idea natural management in hope making for- est lands more profitable while maintaining biodiversity. Assertions sustainability logging practices been inadequately supported, however. We begin with review present knowledge effects operations on various organisms. Post-harvest surveys spectrum forests indicate range from local extirpation substantial increases densities some species. The state our does not permit quantitative predictions, but at any level appears sim- plifying homogenizing diversity when examined community or regional scales. Furthermore, social economic problems presented by systems yet adequately addressed. alternatives strong emphasis "sustainable management" as means retaining communities. These include increased support for secondary forests, restoration degraded lands, plantation forestry, nontimber uses changes accounting procedures reflect true value natu- ral forestry agencies charged protecting reserves. Estas incluyen soporte mayor secundarios, restauracion degradadas, plantaciones forestales, usos diferentes algunos bosques, cambios procediminetos contabilidad reflejar valor verdadero agencias forestales encargadas pro- teccion reservas forestales.
