摘要: Stress wave propagation and shock-induced damage in quartz are issues of key interest for many applications. Here, we present original observations laser shock-loaded single-crystal quartz, showing the strong influence on spall direction shock application versus crystal orientation. Indeed, due to anisotropy atomic structure, a compressive pulse applied onto circular spot may propagate an oblique direction, or change shape during its through target, so that reflection opposite free surface produce specific damage, unexpected locations. Such anisotropic effects have been investigated experimentally by applying shocks thick samples along three particular crystallographic axis. Preliminary three-dimensional computer simulations based rigidity matrix confirmed those effects, good overall consistency has obtained between observed computed all cases.
