摘要: Abstract Riparian zones are a characteristic component of many landscapes throughout the world and increasingly recognised as key areas for biodiversity conservation. Their importance bird communities has been well in semi-arid environments modified where there is marked contrast between riparian adjacent upslope vegetation. The value largely intact with continuous vegetation cover less understood. In this study, birds were surveyed at 30 pairs non-riparian sites extensive mesic forests Victorian Highlands, Australia. floristically distinct from had more complex structure, including mid-storey tree layer mostly absent sites. Bird assemblages significantly greater richness, abundance diversity species than was recorded Species composition also differed these habitat types. Compositional differences due to suite distinctive each significant contrasts densities that occurred both Many (36%) attained habitats. distinctiveness richness avifauna contribute forest landscapes. spatial patterning avifauna, occurrence complementary assemblages, presence rare potential habitats serve refuges, all point highlight landscape-level planning management avifaunal
