摘要: Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the features of two preverbal systems for numerical quantification, approximate number system (ANS) and object tracking (OTS). This also critically assesses their role in cultural learning symbolic numbers. The most important defining feature ANS is that it represents an compressed fashion, such a way sets can be discriminated only if they differ by given ratio. OTS mechanism which objects are represented as distinct individuals tracked through time space. core representing centers on spatio-temporal principles continuity contact. One properties this limited capacity to three four at time. Event-related potential (ERP) source reconstruction was not performed study, does allow any conclusions anatomical dissociation between OTS. In sum, although somewhat inconsistently across studies, seems associated with regions posterior parietal occipital cortices do seem overlap involved ANS. electrophysiological signatures appear distinct.
