Towards a Circular Economy: A Case Study of Waste Conversion into Housing Units in Cotonou, Benin

摘要: Cotonou is the largest city and main economic centre of nation Benin, Africa. Following independence, has experienced major population growth resulting in extensive development slums on flood plains marshes causing loss biodiversity these fragile ecosystems. Infrastructural development, unable to keep pace with informal settlement a cumbersome municipal service system, have led illegal dumping organic plastic wastes, land pollution. In addition, due its primary dune coastal location, facing sea level rise risks demonstrating urgent need sustainably address urban development. Through socio-technical framework, this paper considers use transformed wastes as new building blocks reduce solid waste, create jobs, develop low-cost housing. This strategy offers employment empowerment generate an income US$2,380,000 per annum creation 3200 permanent jobs.
