摘要: Do the determinants of individual support for foreign aid mirror apparent motives behind state giving? Current theories on why states give focus state-level factors highlighting three main motivations: altruistic, strategic, and economic. This work examines whether these also predict attitudes about in donor countries. To investigate this question, I use data from second wave World Values Survey to perform a cross-national analysis public opinion explore strategic hypothesis more rigorously by using CCES survey administered United States around November 2010 election. Questions domestic welfare preference, class membership education, concerns are assessed as predictors tests at level. My results confirm that altruistic variables universally good aid, along with such political interest trust government. Findings economic hypotheses mixed. While is confirmed cross-nationally, self-interest seems play no role determining American sample. Conversely, rejected but it finds among respondents. These raise puzzle future research disconnect between motivations support.
