摘要: The primary aim of this study was to assess the biochemical vitamin B12 and folate status a representative group elderly women (70-80 y) living in Dunedin, New Zealand. A second determine prevalence hyperhomocysteinaemia explore determinants homocysteine (hcy) concentration population. cross-sectional carried out between June August 2000. Two hundred fifty were randomly selected from 1998 electoral roll. Fasting blood samples analysed for folate, B12, total hcy, creatinine, haematological parameters. Of selected, 87 did not respond, 37 traceable, 23 eligible or had died, 103 agreed participate. overall response rate 46%. Based on cut-off 150 pmol/L serum 13% participants would be classified as having sub-optimal status. women, 3 5%, respectively, low ( 15 mumol/L) population 18%. Hyperhomocysteinaemia may partly explained by renal insufficiency because there significant association creatinine plasma hcy (P < 0.001). Blood levels but significantly inversely associated with hcy. In conclusion, moderately high suboptimal concentrations female
