摘要: A phylogenetic analysis of Australian drywood termites (Isoptera, Kalotermitidae) based on partial sequence from the cytochrome oxidase II (COII) and b genes is presented. In addition to providing new information evolutionary relationships among 25 species seven genera, we evaluate relative likelihoods alternative topological hypotheses, including those derived morphology-based classifications. We also test applicability a molecular clock for estimating age Kalotermitidae infer evolution species-specific variation habitat type soldier caste phragmosis by mapping this onto independently phylogeny. Maximum-likelihood both nucleotide protein sequences multigene data set jointly support single topology, which shown be best estimate true phylogeny alternatives tested. Our results monophyly all genera but question discrimination between Procryptotermes Cryptotermes. basal dichotomy generic groups suggests two principle lines divergence within family. Intergeneric show mixed congruence previous proposals, resulting in one classification being rejected. hypothesis not supported due significant among-lineage rate heterogeneity COII gene. Patterns revealed through trait suggest that most recently diverged taxa tend occupy driest habitats these same reflect defensive transition away large mandibulate soldiers toward small phragmotic soldiers. The association defensibility supports characters have been tightly linked throughout social diversification termites.
