摘要: Background: Smear negative and culture positive results in pulmonary tuberculosis are not uncommon yet the underlying factors well established. Objective: To determine associated with smear results. Methods: Pulmonary patients were consecutively recruited for 12 months from five health facilities Mwanza region, Tanzania. Sputum examinations done at recruitment centre TB reference laboratory using Auramine O technique. Culture was Lowenstein Jensen solid media. A post-hoc analysis compared who had a result (case) (controls). Results: total of 655 recruited, 18 no excluded analy- sis. Of remaining 637 patients, 127 (19.9%) three smears 34 case. Current smoking strongly being case, especially women. center, 104 (81.9%) also laboratory. these, 13 (12.5%) still positive. Conclusion: The frequencies smear-negative culture-positive differ between facilities, indicating possible difference quality procedures. Strengthening capacity is needed both optimizing microscopy techniques, performing sputum cultures diagnosing when there high rate suspicion. association needs to be assessed adequately large studies.
