摘要: Aims To determine whether atrial fibrillation (AF) in stroke-free patients is associated with impaired cognition and structural abnormalities of the brain. AF contributes to stroke secondary cognitive decline. In absence manifest stroke, can activate coagulation cause cerebral microembolism which could damage brain. Methods results We cross-sectionally evaluated 122 individuals recruited locally within German Competence Network on AF. As comparator, we 563 aged 37–84 years without from same community. Subjects underwent 3 T magnetic resonance imaging assess covert territorial brain infarction, white matter lesions, volume measures. evidence for dementia, or depression were excluded. Cognitive function was assessed by an extensive neuropsychological test battery covering domains learning memory, attention executive functions, working visuospatial skills. scores radiographic measures compared across stepwise multiple regression models. Stroke-free performed significantly worse tasks memory (s = −0.115, P < 0.01) as well functions −0.105, subjects There also a trend ( 0.062) towards performance chronic paroxysmal Corresponding impairment, hippocampal reduced Other did not differ between groups. Conclusion Even risk factor impairment atrophy. Therefore, integrity should be considered evaluation novel treatments
