摘要: Age-related cataract and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are important public health problems. Approximately 50% of the 30 to 50 million cases blindness worldwide result from unoperated cataract. In US other developed countries AMD is leading cause blindness, but remains visual disability. represent an enormous economic burden. United States more than 1.3 extractions performed annually at a cost approximately $3.5 billion. Much experimental research on etiology has focused role nutritional antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids). Evidence epidemiologic studies support for in delaying onset these vision disorders. Although it not yet possible conclude that antioxidant nutrients have prevention or AMD, summary evidence suggests prudent consume diets high vitamins C E carotenoids, particularly xanthophylls, as insurance against development AMD.
