Grounding desire and motivated behavior: A theoretical framework and review of empirical evidence

摘要: Experiencing and dealing with desire is a central part of human existence. Whether it for food, drink, sex, fame, social connectedness, or world peace, our desires shape energize much daily life. A large literature, especially in health psychology, has focused on the ways which affect cognition behavior. Similarly, many studies have outlined handling such responsibly, example, by planning advance how to respond them (e.g., Adriaanse, de Ridder, & Wit, 2009), thinking about one’s long-term goals when tempted give short-term temptations (Fishbach, Friedman, Kruglanski, 2003; Papies, Potjes, Keesman, Schwinghammer, van Koningsbruggen, 2014), applying mental strategies as mindfulness Alberts, Thewissen, Raes, 2012; Jenkins Tapper, press; Barsalou, Custers, 2012). We know less, however, arises first place. What are actual psychological mechanisms that produce consequently behavior fulfill them? neural underlie processes lead desire, associated behaviors indulging tasty drinking expensive wine, driving across state see loved one? To answer these questions, we develop grounded theory motivated behavior, review empirical work consistent it. Our does not aim replace earlier accounts. Instead, further cognitive, affective, together can follow, attempting integrate shed new light findings, domains nonconscious goal-pursuit, habits, self-regulation.
