摘要: PURPOSE (1) To test the hypothesis that corneas with enlarged endothelial cells (and thus less intercellular space) have decreased permeability to small polar solutes. (2) measure corneal ouabain binding (Na+/K+ ATPase "pump site" density) and Descemet's membrane production after wounding. METHODS Bilateral specular microscopy anterior segment fluorophotometry were performed at 2-month intervals for 1 year in ten cats mechanically damaging endothelium one eye of each. The measurements repeated 2 years four 3 two cats. Eighteen months wounding, was measured both eyes six Transmission electron micrographs analyzed 18 months, years, RESULTS From 6 12 carboxyfluorescein significantly (P < 0.05), mean cell size increased 0.001) damaged eyes. persisted few observed There no significant difference between control tested On subsequent histologic examination, a layer abnormal present all wounded eyes, additional normal posterior it, cells. CONCLUSIONS results are consistent solutes varies directly amount space available diffusion across monolayer. also confirm clinical reports In histopathologic specimens, can be historical marker period damage decompensation.
