摘要: BACKGROUND The primary diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma/leukemia (NHL) by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is controversial. The authors reviewed their experience with FNA and flow cytometry (FC) to determine the usefulness limitations these techniques in NHL. METHODS Slides reports from all lymph node extranodal FNAs performed during period July 1993 January 1997 a lymphoma or benign lymphoid process were reviewed. Clinical biopsy follow-up data recorded. Results tabulated cytology was analyzed. RESULTS There 100 adequate aspirates 87 patients. These included 72 cases NHL, 58 (80%) which diagnosed FC without need for histologic sampling (69% lymphomas 88% recurrent lymphomas). There 22 suspicious lymphoma, 12 equivocal results, 7 diagnoses. Eighty-six percent malignant (50 58) had as compared only 15% (5 34) FNAs. CONCLUSIONS FNA valuable method diagnosing subclassifying although immunophenotyping often an essential ancillary test. In our experience, correlating results can eliminate more invasive surgical many cases. Cancer (Cancer Cytopathol) 1998;84:252-261. © 1998 American Society.
