China-ASEAN Relations: Perspectives, Prospects, and Implications for U.S. Interests

摘要: Abstract : This monograph describes the evolving China-ASEAN relationship over past 15 years and examines key elements of this in areas economic/trade interdependence, security dialogue cooperation, Chinese diplomacy expanding influence region, efforts managing unresolved territorial disputes, ASEAN member states continuing concerns about hedging strategy against an ever growing China. Three underlying themes are interwoven with discussions both chronological developments major issues study. The first Beijing's post-Tiananmen diplomatic offensive: a good neighborly policy establishing restoring ties states. It assesses how changing environments at international regional levels drove foreign during initial post-Cold War period where disintegration former Soviet Union effectively had reduced utility "China Card" hence its strategic importance triangle. A more focused Asia necessity led to greater attention Southeast Asia.
