Synthesis of defect-free single-phase bars of high-melting Laves phases through modified cold crucible levitation melting

摘要: Laves phases are the most abundant intermetallic phases. However, their mechanical properties only poorly understood due to difficulties in producing defect-free samples which large enough for testing. By using a modified cold crucible levitation melting technique with situ heat treatment and subsequent defined cooling, massive bars of several hundreds grams brittle high-melting were produced. Metallographic investigation revealed single- or near single-phase microstructures homogeneous chemical composition within cast ingots diameter 15 mm more than 100 length. With these high-quality it is now possible prepare that can be used obtaining data
