Managing in a crisis: How can Asian organizations support and promote cooperative responses from employees?

摘要: As we experience increasingly more disasters and crises, particularly in the Asian region, organizations face challenges managing their employees’ psychological reactions behaviors during after a crisis. The collectivist culture typical of many countries is potential advantage eliciting cooperative at such times. This presentation will briefly discuss qualitative study experiences hospital employees working Singaporean 2003 SARS outbreak. In thi s research, participants attended two successive interviews designed to build rapport allow in-depth examination employee’s experiences. first interview, were asked describe SARS, actions they perceived took, own work that period. second shown organizational employee had been discussed round interviews. Using car d sort technique, then encouraged hospital’s give reasons for each. data indicated individual voluntary philanthropic - took on extra tasks put themselves into situations great risk, organizationa l citizenship but performed under considerable duress. also showed felt pride taken by hospital, professional sense together “battle against SARS” inspired individuals engage behaviours beyond job requirements. Many well-established concepts emerged from data: extra-role behaviors, altruism, commitment, identification, professionalism. findings suggest concept professionali sm requires further model linking identification/commitments OCBs proposed.
