Dietary Supplement Use by Community-living Population in Japan: Data from the National Institute for Longevity Sciences Longitudinal Study of Aging (NILS-LSA)

摘要: BACKGROUND: There are few studies about dietary supplement use and nutrient intake from these products in Japan. The purpose of this study was to clarify (1) the prevalence use, (2) characteristics users, (3) supplements, (4) existence users who took excessive nutrients products.METHODS: To collect information on previous year products, we conducted a self-administered frequency questionnaire. subjects were 2,259 people aged 40-82 years. Dietary supplements grouped into 8 major categories. A database developed estimate products. Excess defined as consumed more than tolerable upper level Reference Intakes for Japanese.RESULTS: In year, 55 % males 61 females supplements. especially prevalent females, felt unhealthy, careful maintaining an appropriate weight, though association affected by use. most common drink type vitamins females. Some values obtained higher those food. found vitamin A, B6, K, niacin, iron, magnesium.CONCLUSIONS: It is important products.J Epidemiol 2006; 16: 249-260.
