Although international domestic trade regulations are in place, ‘exceptional circumstances’ Asian big cats is legally permitted. More generally, irrespective legal status, also has potential to compromise wild animal welfare. We report an apparent shift toward commercial captive bred leopards, irregularities that point possible laundering caught animals, document presence individuals ‘tiger farms’ south-east Asia a ‘lion park’ South Africa. found records contradictory incomplete, with data source country particularly lacking. This study highlights ‘legal loopholes’ apply all cat species. As precautionary measure, support calls extend existing bans so they include individuals. Illegal derivatives can openly be observed online at wildlife markets range countries where enforcement weak. However, energetic search revealed specific regarding leopards argue this not grounds for complacency, but rather suggests need research into dynamics, cooperation between national agencies, improved compliance management systems, destruction private held stockpiles revision frameworks prevent illegal these other threatened felids.
