摘要: While mangroves are indigenous to northern New Zealand and an integral part of functioning estuaries, rapid expansion mangrove forests has occurred in recent decades, resulting widespread support for estuarine restoration projects focusing on removals. Mangrove is primarily associated with changes land-use that increase terrestrial sediment erosion deposition into coastal environments. Objectives removal often include a desire by local residents restore open estuary sandflat conditions areas have been colonised since the 1950s, reinstate navigational, recreational amenity value these areas. However, likelihood successful rarely considered consent decisions, minimal information available long-term trends ecosystem health from where were cleared. Here, we discuss methods removal, recovery trajectories at numerous sites identify physical biological attributes limited (or fast) recovery, adverse impacts. We also cost-effective management strategies manage further spread Zealand. Within challenging politically vibrant topic, informing ‘mangrove debate’ science create better outcomes health.
