摘要: This report is part of a series community profiles on the ecology wetland and marine communities. particular profile considers tidal marshes southeastern Atlantic coast, from North Carolina south to northern Florida. Alone among earth's ecosystems, coastal communities are subjected bidirectional flooding sometimes occurring twice each day; this affects successional development, species composition, stability, productivity. In tidally influenced salt marsh, salinity ranges less than 1 ppt that seawater. Dominant plant include cordgrasses (Spartina alterniflora S. cynosuroides), black needlerush (Juncus romerianus), marsh bulrush (Scirpus robustus). Both terrestrail aquatic animals occur in herons, egrets ospreys (Pandion haliaetus), bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), alligators (Alligator Mississippiensis), manatees (Trichecus manatus), oysters, mussels, fiddler crabs. Currently, only significant direct commercial use by crabbers seeking blue crab Callinectes sapidus, but quite important recreationally, aesthetically, educationally. 151 refs., 45 figs., 6 tabs.
