摘要: Avirulence (Avr) genes of plant pathogens encode effector proteins that trigger immunity in plants carrying appropriate resistance (R) genes. The Phytophthora sojae Avr3a gene displays allelic variation messenger RNA transcript levels. P. strains with detectable transcripts are avirulent on the R-gene Rps3a, whereas lacking mRNA escape detection by Rps3a and virulent. Here we show non-Mendelian interactions between naturally occurring alleles result transgenerational silencing, identify small molecules 25 nucleotides abundant gene-silenced but not mRNA. This example silencing is exceptional because it results gain virulence a pathogenic organism.
