Annual Costs of Care for Pediatric Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Functional Abdominal Pain, and Functional Abdominal Pain Syndrome

摘要: Objectives To estimate annual medical and nonmedical costs of care for children diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or functional abdominal pain (syndrome; FAP/FAPS). Study design Baseline data from IBS FAP/FAPS who were included in a multicenter trial (NTR2725) The Netherlands analyzed. Patients' parents completed questionnaire concerning usage healthcare resources, travel costs, out-of-pocket expenses, productivity loss parents, supportive measures at school. Use related prescription medication was derived case reports forms. Total per patient calculated as the sum direct indirect costs. Costs initial diagnostic investigations not included. Results A total 258 children, mean age 13.4 years (±5.5), included, 183 (70.9%) female. estimated to be €2512.31. Inpatient outpatient use major cost drivers, accounting 22.5% 35.2% respectively. Parental accounted 22.2% No difference found between FAP/FAPS. Conclusions Pediatric gastrointestinal disorders impose large economic burden on patients' families systems. More than one-half consist inpatient use. Trial registration Registry: NTR2725.
