摘要: Industrial and urban activities in the Leeds catchment of River Aire have caused widespread dispersal contamination by a variety pollutants, including heavy metals. This is reflected enhanced metal concentrations sediments soils river floodplain. The cycling sediment associated metals fluvial environment highly related to hydrological, geomorphological chemical phenomena. main research objective investigate quantitatively dispersal, storage remobilisation reach Aire. A wide relevant processes are analysed. Metal pollution studies often neglected industrial catchments, where sources pollutants channel diverse. In past, entered from activities, sewage disposal coal combustion. present source domestic effluent treatment works. The wastes has aquatic floodplain soils. results long-term corridors poses problems as act contaminants long after system been abated. problem most severe immediately downstream works, through city centre, traffic density greatest floodplains frequently inundated with floodwaters. Heavy not necessarily permanently fixed can be remobilised mechanical, biological processes, affecting surface groundwater quality plant animal human health. However, it total amount stored sediment, but how actually bound that important assessing its environmental impact. Results suggest significant proportion each held potentially mobile bioavailable form, particularly cadmium. The data collected used compile mass budgets for alluvial area Leeds.
