摘要: BACKGROUND Acute bacterial meningitis is a rare but extremely severe disease. The aim of this study was to investigate whether neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) present and measurable in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) if its assessment may be useful for identifying patients with meningitis. METHODS Eligible specimens were all consecutive CSFs suspect acute that referred from the Unit Infectious Diseases routine chemical morphological analysis over three months period. CSF measurements consisted NGAL, glucose, total protein concentrations, along cell count differential. RESULTS Eighty eight received throughout period, 58 (66%) findings compatible values white blood cells (WBC), polymorphonuclear (PMN) mononuclear (MONO) leukocytes, red (RBC), proteins, NGAL significantly increased positive CSFs, whereas glucose did not differ. A significant correlation found between concentration PMN, WBC, RBC MONO. showed an area under curve (AUC) 0.94 specificity sensitivity 1.00 0.741 at diagnostic threshold 13 ng/mL. CONCLUSIONS measurement helpful CSFs.
