OBJECTIVES To determine bacterial pathogens associated with hospital acquired surgical site infection (SSI) urinary tract (UTI) assess their susceptibility patterns patients admitted Mekelle Hospital Ethiopia. METHODS From November 2005 April 2006 a prospective cross sectional study was conducted at Hospital, Tigray region, North The population comprised total 246 informed consented adult hospitalized for (n = 212) Gynecology Obstetrics cases 34). Gram negative bacteria were predominantly isolated rate 18/34 (53%) 34/41 (83%) from SSI UTI respectively. Most isolates have high rates resistance (> 80%) commonly used antibiotics such as ampicillin, amoxicillin, chloramphenicol, gentamicin, streptomycin, trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole; amoxicillin trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole. CONCLUSIONS results showed that HAIs is when compared previous Ethiopian other despite use prophylactic antibiotics. causing UT7 often resistant antimicrobials. findings underscore need an control system surveillance program monitor antimicrobial pattern therapeutic
