摘要: The Seniors' Program for Injury Control and Education (SPICE) examines the effects of exercise physical fitness on falls related injuries among older persons. design is a two-group, randomized trial with 2 years follow-up. study at Northwest Region Kaiser Permanente (NWKP), large hospital-based prepaid group practice HMO in Portland, OR. participants are 1,323 community-living persons 65 or who enrolled NWKP moderate risk falling. A multifaceted intervention strategy uses approach to injury prevention which includes intensity endurance-building (walking), strength balance training, home safety improvements, mental practice. Sessions 20-25 led by two nurses. Participants set their own realistic goals exercising accommodate differing functional abilities baseline conditioning. control receives usual care from HMO. report all after randomization. Outcome measures include health status, functioning, falls, fall-related medical use cost. If SPICE effective, cost-effectiveness analysis will examine relative efficiency versus other successful FICSIT interventions. Thus far, recruitment compliance have been met population frail elderly members.
