摘要: A typical feature in members of the mustelid family is sexual size dimorphism, related to different reproductive strategies sexes. As a consequence divergence many ecological and behavioural traits expected, including temporal strategies. In line with this prediction, sex differences diel activity pattern European polecat Mustela putorius, dimorphic mustelid, were quantified tested. Twenty-eight polecats captured rural area central Italy (Abruzzo region) 10 males six females monitored field using radio-telemetry techniques for 81–621 days each. Males showed pronounced dimorphism (males/females mass ratio=1.6) within known range species. Multivariate analysis time preference shows that behaviour differed significantly markedly between exhibited regular constant nocturnal every season, preferring ranging from 20:00 06:00; was lower at dawn dusk, scarce during daylight hours. Females diurnal crepuscular but individuals revealed flexibility pattern, polyphasic or arrhythmic patterns without apparent organization. The constraints small body reproduction on female activity, segregation timing are discussed context intrasexual territoriality.
