Reaction of nitrogen with stirred and unstirred liquid lithium

摘要: The rates of reaction between nitrogen and liquid lithium at 400° have been studied by following changes in pressure gas a closed system. metal, contained steel vessels, was stirred vigorously an external rotating magnet, its surface broken baffle. results are regular reproducible. passes through three stages which the follow rectilinear, logarithmic, parabolic laws successively, independent pressure. In absence stirring, there is no rectilinear stage. When presence nitrogen, spreads over total internal area containing vessels; therefore influenced vessel dimensions correlated on this basis. A value 33 kcal. mole has determined for activation energy stage when obey law, not inhibited films. This ‘fresh surface’ compares with 15·5 kcal./mole carrying continuous nitride film. product identified as Li3N, possible mechanisms discussed.
