Combined cytological and histological diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma in ultrasonically guided fine needle biopsy specimens.

摘要: This study evaluates the usefulness of a combined cytological and histological approach to diagnosis hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) when applied fine needle biopsy specimens obtained under ultrasonic guidance. The material, aspirated from 51 focal liver lesions, was handled in such way that there sufficient material for both (cell block) assessment. Of 29 cases HCC studied, confident made 23 (79%). In remaining six cases, features were considered be suspicious but not diagnostic HCC. Examination cell blocks enabled all cases. due supplementary visual information provided by features, particularly pattern arrangement tumour cells.
