摘要: Gas exchange is the vital function of lungs. It occurs in alveoli, where oxygen and carbon dioxide diffuse across alveolar epithelium capillary endothelium surrounding separated only by a fused basement membrane 0.2-0.5 μm thickness. This tenuous barrier exposed to dangerous or innocuous particles, toxins, allergens infectious agents inhaled with air carried blood. The lung immune system has evolved ward off pathogens restrain inflammation-mediated damage maintain gas exchange. Lung-resident macrophages dendritic cells are located close proximity epithelial surface respiratory capillaries sample examine air-borne blood-borne material. In communication cells, they set threshold quality response.
