Phase-Stable Self-Modulation of an Electron Beam in a Magnetic Wiggler.

摘要: Electron beams with a sinusoidal energy modulation have the potential to emit subfemtosecond x-ray pulses in free-electron laser. An can be generated by overlapping powerful infrared laser an electron beam magnetic wiggler. We report on new source for this modulation, coherent radiation from itself. In self-modulation process, current spike tail of radiates coherently at resonant wavelength wiggler, producing six-period carrier-envelope-phase (CEP)-stable field gigawatt power. This creates few MeV, phase-stable electron-beam core. The modulated is immediately useful generating any machine repetition rate, and CEP-stable may find application as experimental pump or timing diagnostic.
