摘要: Background: Duplex ultrasonography and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) are becoming competitive alternatives to for determining the degree of internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis. Varying reports have been published regarding suitability each technique grading ICA disease. This retrospective study compared merits these three modalities measuring stenosis. Methods: One hundred eleven patients being considered endarterectomy underwent intra-arterial digital subtraction (DSA) via arch injection. Duplex imaging was performed in all MRA 50. The stenosis estimated by compared. Results: There good correlation between subjectively graded DSA images (r = 0·87, P < 0·001, n 82 carotids) but poor objective estimates. tended underestimate (bias – 4·5 per cent) with DSA, showed duplex estimates 0·86, 87 carotids). Both non-invasive produced high values sensitivity specificity estimating stenoses greater than 70 cent. less sensitive distinguishing severe complete occlusion. Conclusion: This did not resolve debate method choice as both were accurate stenoses. © 1999 British Journal Surgery Society Ltd
